When I Think of Child Development

If I had my child to raise over again
I'd build self-esteem first and the house later
I'd finger paint more and point the finger less
I would do less correcting and more connecting
I'd take my eyes off my watch and watch with my eyes
I would care to know less and know to care more
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites
I'd stop playing serious and seriously play
I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars
I'd do more hugging and less tugging
I'd see the oak tree in the acorn more often
I would be firm less often and affirm much more
I'd model less about the love of power
And more about the power of love.

The poem gave me goose bumps. In otherwords, the words touched my spirit. During these two courses, I have had the same thoughts that are expressed in this poem. There are so many things I would have differently with my first son. Thank you for the poem, and thank you for being my colleague.

  3. Tonetta,
Loved the poem, I just put it on my facebook page. Only if I had the chance to do it over, I would have changed a lot of things. I have taken for life for granted and not realize the impact I have on my children's lives. Sometimes I need to slow down and enjoy the creations I have made. I have learned to slow down time by enjoying each moment with my children. I don’t worry about what I have to do next just embrace what I’m doing now.
Really enjoyed the poem and thank you for sharing,
    Vennetta

  4. Tonetta,
Thank you for all of your support throughout this Development class. I am very inspired by your poem and it has brought a smile to this gloomy week. My ability to cope was tried this week with a tornadoes destruction, but you and the others have helped me through. I look forward to reading your discussion posts and blogs insights in the upcoming class. Have a restful week!
    Ginny
